The All India Council for Technical Education endorsed the recommendations of the working group in technical education in 1978 and resolved that a few polytechnics which have necessary capacity to undertake rural development work be selected to act as focal points to promote transfer of technology to the rural sector and make contributions to rural development.
The Council also recommended that these polytechnics may be designated as “Community Polytechnics”. The Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development, selected 73 polytechnics in the national level as community polytechnics and granted central assistance to meet the expenditure on this new activity from the year 1993-94.
The community polytechnic acts as an effective change agent in increasing productivity, generating employment and improving life style of rural masses and above all in promoting a coordinated development according to well chalked out plans with built-in mechanism for monitoring, feedback for timely corrective measures and optimization.

Through this Scheme, we have been conducting various activities like,

• Socio-Economic Survey
• Manpower Development and Training Courses
• Transfer of Technology
• Technical Services
• Support Services, and
• Dissemination of Information.

All the above programmes have been conducted completely free of cost for the welfare of rural unemployed youth (men and women) of the villages in and around Sivakasi.
Under the Manpower Development and Training courses, we have been training 600 candidates every year. The following free training courses have been conducted in our Main Center and Extension Centers.
